How to Play Craps

Craps is one of the most sociable and exciting games available at online casinos, and if you know how to play it can also be one of the most profitable, thanks to some of the best odds around. Craps is played with two dice. The first roll of a game of craps is known as the "come out roll". A come out roll of 7 or 11 automatically wins the bet that the player placed on the pass line, and a roll of 2, 3, or 12 automatically loses. If the come out roll is a 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, or 10 the shooter continues to roll the dice until he matches the come out roll, resulting in another come out roll. Or he rolls a 7 or 11 and "craps out", which means that he loses the bet and control of the dice.

Craps Pass Line
A pass line bet is placed before the initial come out roll and is viewed as betting with the shooter (the player rolling the dice). On the first roll, a 7 or 11 is automatically a win. You automatically lose with a roll of a 2, 3, or 12. If the come out roll is a 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, or 10 then the shooter makes this number his "point" and the shooter wins if the point number is rolled before he rolls a 7. If he rolls a 7 first then bet is lost. The pass line bet pays out at odds of 1 to 1.

Craps Don't Pass Line
A don't pass line bet is placed before the initial come out roll and is the opposite of a pass line bet. This bet is won on an initial roll of 2, 3, or 12 and loses on a 7 or 11. If none of these are rolled on the come out roll, a "point" is established and the player wins the bet if a 7 is rolled before the point number is rolled. If the point is rolled before a 7 then the player loses. The don't pass line bet pays out at odds of 1 to 1.

Craps Come Bet
A come bet is available after a point number is established after the first roll. The next roll of the dice is a winner if 7 or 11 is rolled, and a loser if 2, 3, or 12 is thrown. If another value is rolled (4, 5, 6, 8, 9, or 10) the bet stays on the table, and if the point is rolled before a 7, then you win. If a 7 is rolled before the point number, the bet is then lost. The come bet pays out at odds of 1 to 1.

Craps Don't Come Bet
A don't come bet is the opposite of a come bet. It becomes available after the initial come out roll. The bet is won if a 2, 3 or 12 is rolled and lost if a 7 or 11 is rolled. If another value is rolled (4, 5, 6, 8, 9, or 10) the bet stays on the table, and if the point is rolled before a 7, then you lose the bet. If a 7 is rolled before the point then you win. The don't come bet pays out at odds of 1 to 1.

Craps Place Bet
After the come out roll, you can make a "place" bet, which is when you bet on a specific number that you want or do not want to be rolled next. The only numbers you can bet on are 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, and 10. You can make multiple place bets as well as take previous bets off the table after each roll if nothing is won or lost. If you make a place bet for a number to win, this number must be rolled before a 7 comes out. If you bet on a number to lose, you need the 7 to hit before that number for the win.

Craps Buy-Lay Bet
A buy or lay bet is similar to a place bet, but a 5% commission is paid to the house to get true odds. A buy bet is placed on a number to win, and a lay bet is placed on a number to lose.

Craps Field Bet
A field bet is only good for the very next roll. It pays out at odds of 1 to 1 for a roll of 3, 4, 9, 10 or 11, and at odds of 2 to 1 on a roll of 2 or 12.

Craps Big 6 and Big 8 Bet
A Big 6 bet is a bet that a 6 will be rolled before a 7 for a win, and a Big 8 bet is a bet that an 8 will be rolled before a 7 for a win. Both of these bets pay out at odds of 1 to 1.

Craps Hardway Bet
A hardway bet is a bet that a certain hard combination will be rolled before a 7 or the same soft combination is rolled. These bets can pay up to 30 to 1 payout, but you have to be really lucky to get a winner!

Craps Odds Bet (Craps Secret Bet)
The odds bet is the best bet in the casino because there no house advantage. The bet is not listed on the craps layout but knowledgeable craps players know all about it, which is why it is sometimes called the 'secret' bet!

After you make a pass line bet, the casino allows you to make an additional bet known as the odds bet after the shooter makes a point number. This bet is placed behind your original pass line bet on the craps layout. When a shooter makes his point, you are paid even money for your pass line bet and you are paid true odds for your odds bet.

If the point is 4 or 10 you are paid 2 to 1.

If the point is 5 or 9 you are paid 3 to 2.

If the point is 6 or 8 you are paid 6 to 5.

Craps Gaming Tips
Never place hardway bets or hedge bets unless you're feeling lucky, because they have a huge house advantage. The don't pass line is known to have a smaller house edge than the pass line, and the don't pass line bet has the best odds in all of the casino, especially when you make an 'odds bet' on the don't pass line. The odds bet can literally lower the house advantage to 0%, as we described a moment ago, and no other casino game can compete with this.
